Summer Associate F.A.Q's

Q: What is the structure of the summer associate program?

A: Summer associates rotate through two of four departments (corporate, bankruptcy litigation and securities/real estate). We make every effort to accommodate summer associates' departmental requests and, if we are unable to give them both of their choices, we try to get them at least one or two assignments from the department they are unable to work in. Within each department, there is a partner mentor and a big brother or sister to offer guidance and assistance to the summer associates.

Q: What type of assignments will I receive as a summer associate?

A: We always try to get our summer associates involved in our most interesting matters and give them a wide range of assignments. Summer associates conduct research, prepare legal memoranda, assist in the preparation of various pleadings and briefs and get involved in corporate transactional work. Whenever possible, we bring our summer associates to closings, court hearings, depositions and client meetings.

Q: Do summer associates receive training at Hahn & Hessen?

A: Our summer associates receive both formal and informal training. All of the partners and associates at Hahn & Hessen make it a priority to ensure that our summer associates are not just completing assignments, but are receiving the training they need to become competent attorneys. In addition to the "on the job" training summer associates receive on a daily basis, we sponsor in-house lectures and CLE programs for summer associates, as well as our attorneys, to make sure everyone is familiar with developments in the areas of law that are pertinent to our practice.

Q: Are the partners and associates accessible in case I have questions?

A: Hahn & Hessen is proud of its "open door" atmosphere. All of our attorneys are happy to discuss any matter of concern to a summer associate, whether it be a legal issue, a difficult assignment, or questions about the firm.

Q: Do the attorneys at Hahn & Hessen make an effort to get to know the summer associates?

A: It is very important to us to get to know our summer associates. Through partner lunches, social events ranging from wine and cheese parties to baseball games to our annual attorney dinner, as well as informal lunch and after-work outings with associates, summer associates will get to know and spend time with everyone at the firm.

Q: What kind of hours will I work as a summer associate?

A: Summer associates, like our associates, enjoy the quality of life commensurate with the balance between personal and professional lives, as reflected by our more reasonable billing expectations.

Q: What do you like about working at Hahn & Hessen?

A: At Hahn & Hessen, we are able to work with sophisticated clients on complex matters, but enjoy the "family" atmosphere and quality of life of a mid-sized firm. This makes Hahn & Hessen a great place to work.
